Some say cats have nine lives. Others believe they have a sixth sense. But every now and then, a story comes along that makes you wonder if maybe… both are true.

Let me tell you about Emmy — a sleek black cat with piercing eyes and a quiet confidence, who once lived aboard a grand ocean liner in the early 1900s.

🚢 A Cat at Sea

Emmy wasn’t just any cat. She was the resident ship's cat on the RMS Empress of Ireland, a Canadian Pacific steamship known for carrying passengers across the Atlantic. Like many ships of the time, it wasn’t uncommon to have a cat on board. They kept mice at bay and offered comfort and companionship to crew members on long, lonely voyages.

Emmy had become a fixture aboard the Empress. She knew every nook and cranny of the ship, and the sailors adored her. Some even considered her a good luck charm — and like clockwork, she boarded for each voyage without a fuss.

Until one day… she didn’t.

🐾 The Day Emmy Said No

It was May 28, 1914. The ship was preparing to set sail from Quebec to Liverpool with over 1,400 people on board. But Emmy, usually calm and cooperative, was acting strange. She paced the docks nervously, tail twitching, eyes wide. When crew members tried to bring her aboard, she clawed and twisted, slipping away and darting under crates to hide.

Several attempts were made to coax her back. But Emmy refused.

Eventually, the crew gave up. The Empress of Ireland left without her.

That night, tragedy struck.

⚓ A Watery Grave

In the early morning hours of May 29, just hours into its journey, the Empress of Ireland collided with a Norwegian coal ship in the dense fog of the Saint Lawrence River. The damage was catastrophic. The ship sank in less than 15 minutes.

Over 1,000 passengers and crew lost their lives in one of the worst maritime disasters in Canadian history.

Emmy, the cat who refused to board, survived.

👁️ A Sixth Sense?

To this day, the story of Emmy has become part of maritime legend. Was it luck? Coincidence? Or did Emmy sense something the humans couldn’t?

Many believe cats have a unique intuition — an ability to sense danger before it arrives. We may never know what Emmy felt that day on the docks, but her story continues to send a shiver down the spine of cat lovers and historians alike.

One thing is certain: sometimes, when a cat says no... you should listen.
